Happy Tuesday lovelies! Hope everyone's week is off to a fabulous start! So if you read my post yesterday you know I went to a wedding over the weekend and saw a little sneak peek of my outfit post for today. When it comes to weddings that I'm attending as a guest I'm super picky about what I'm going to wear. Usually I want to know if the dress code is formal, semi-formal, cocktail, etc. Not to mention the time of day, location and usually what the wedding colors are. Obviously everyone knows the rule about not wearing white to a wedding but I have my own little rule that I like to avoid wearing the same color as the bridal party. I don't want to be mistaken as part of the wedding party and I don't want to wear the same color as them and take away from that special feeling you have being part of the wedding party.
I actually got invited to this wedding pretty last minute. So I didn't have time to go out and shop for something new so instead I shopped my closet. I bought this dress a few years ago and I've surprisingly only worn it a handful of times so when I was picking an outfit for this wedding I knew this would be a perfect choice. The bridal party was wearing blue so I could easily get away with black and green and it was a cocktail/formal attire event so I knew this little silk number would do the trick. Since the wedding took place in the evening I knew my peacoat was a necessity to keep warm but I just couldn't bring myself to wear tights and closed toed shoes because it was so gorgeous out before the sun went down. I almost always keep my jewelry and accessories understated for a wedding just because I don't want a huge statement piece taking away from anything. Not to mention wedding pictures are timeless, I want to make sure any picture I happen to be in I don't look back at and be like "Wow. That necklace went out of style like two weeks after that!". Does anyone else give themselves rules to abide by when attending a wedding?
Your wedding rules are very good. I always keep it pretty classic. Such a good idea though to find out what the bridal party is wearing, because I wore the same plum color dress at my cousin's wedding and even though the style was way different I just didn't feel right! xo
Ive definitely tried not to wear the same color as the wedding party, too, if I know what it is ahead of time. I also don't wear white either....duh :) You looked fab at the wedding girl!
I just love those heels and the dress looks amazing! My favorite part is the zipper detail. I honestly don't know that I've ever thought about wedding rules as much as you detailed. It all makes sense, though. All of this will probably be in the back of my head the next time I'm headed to a wedding!
So glad we got to see this dress up close a little more!! It's such a pretty color and i'm dying over that lipstick - so pretty! xo, Biana - BlovedBoston
Such a pretty dress! I love the exposed zipper in the front, so unique! It's always a good thing to consider bridal pary colors as well when getting dressed. Great choice!!
You look beautiful! That's a great cocktail dress for any occasion. I'm with you - I always try to avoid wearing the same color as the bridal party. I've been a bridesmaid enough that now when I go to wedding as a guest, I want to enjoy as a guest and not be mistaken for one of the bridal party! :)
it's nice that you're thoughtful about what you wear to a wedding! i had a few friends who showed up to my wedding in the same colors as the bridesmaids...it was a little akward haha xo jillian - cornflake dreams
You are a beauty!! LOVE your fun dress! I'm surprised you don't wear it more! And no, I totally don't make rules for myself, HA! But I'm sure you could have guessed that, I'm totally clueless! I was totally thinking while reading, "Wow! There is so much work that goes into getting dressed" ha ha! This is why I need people like you in my life to guide me through my wardrobe!
Gorgeous! And definitely perfect for a wedding. That is a good point about not wearing the same color as the bridal party, I've never really considered it,but it makes perfect sense!
I definitely don't wear white, cream, or anything that could be mistaken as such. It's also super important to me to keep in mind cultural respect when choosing what to wear. If I'm attending a ceremony in a church or a chapel, I'm definitely covering up my shoulders and keeping the length of my dress or skirt appropriate; or, if the couple getting married has decided to maintain their cultural heritage in their wedding, I'll make sure to ask questions about what's appropriate or do my own research - the last thing you want is someone's grandma looking at you in shock!
this dress is gorgeous on you! i am pretty picking about wedding attire as well, i'll never wear white (or cream or anything, unless it's like a two tone then maybe its ok) and i will never wear black. i know a lot of people wear black to weddings nowadays but i swear at home they never used to and it super bothers me, no idea why.
I love this post because I have very strong feelings about what you should/should not wear to a wedding! Totally agree about not wearing the same color as the bridesmaids - I had a friend wear almost an exact replica of my dresses to my wedding and I knew she was already bitter about not being asked so things were awkward, ha! Love your wedding look!
That's a good point about the bridal party, however sometimes I have no clue what the wedding colors are. But definitely no white.. that is a serious no-no!! I would kick someone out haha :)
What a beautiful outfit! It's so true, I'm not a big fan of wearing the same color as the bridal party either! Just found your blog and love your style!! xoxo Karen in London http://kensingtonwest.me.uk
I have the same rules - nothing close to any shade of white or the same color as the bridal party. A lot of people don't seem to care as much about the second one but it seems like the polite thing to do. You look absolutely amazing in this dress!
Loving these rules! I tend to wear statement pieces at times, maybe as a look back and laugh. I love this dress so much! I love the print and the color is just gorgeous!
