A Day in St. Augustine
10/09/2017
Oh Monday. So we meet again. This weekend I took advantage of the nice weather and did some touristy things around Florida, one of which included heading to one of my favorite cities in Florida, St. Augustine. A lot of people don't really think about heading to St. Augustine for a day trip while visiting Florida but it's definitely worth the visit... especially if you don't mind doing a lot of walking. So today I figured I'd share some of my favorite parts about St. Augustine.
One of the must stop places (in my opinion) is Maple Street Biscuit Company. They're only open until 3 pm and are closed on Saturday so plan accordingly but I can promise you, it will be some of the best biscuits you'll ever have. I opted for The Five which is a biscuit with a fried chicken breast, cheddar cheese, applewood smoked bacon and topped with sausage gravy. It was literally heaven on a plate all for only $7.
After loading up on carbs, you're going to want to do some walking which is perfect considering St. Augustine is not the easiest down to drive around in. The walk down to the water gives you a chance to hop in and out of some shops and get a nice little breeze along the way. I always have to stop and check out the Bridge of Lions which is another one of my favorite bridges.
Just a short walk down the road is Castillo de San Marcos which happens to be the oldest masonry fort in the continental United States and a pretty cool place to just walk around for a bit.
By this point you're most likely pretty warm and in need of a break but have no fear, there are plenty of places to stop and grab a drink. One of my favorite places to go is slightly off the main strip but still easily within walking distance, Ice Plant. The bar is located in an old ice plant facility on the second floor and has the most Instagram worthy decor you can imagine not to mention amazing craft cocktails.
After cooling off, you definitely have to walk by Flagler College and The Lightner Museum and check out the gorgeous architecture.
Of course no trip would be complete without a little shopping so you definitely want to take a stroll around St. George Street and pop in and out of all the local shops. You never know what fun little treasures you'll find.
After that (at least for me) it's time to head home because I'm usually exhausted. That was about 4.5 miles of walking total but you can easily do more or less depending on what all you want to do and see. There are also plenty of trains to hop on and off of if you aren't big on walking or want to cover more ground. St. Augustine is definitely a one stop shop for a day's worth of fun!
