Sequins and Sea Breezes: Ladies Guide to Football: Offensive Play

Ladies Guide to Football: Offensive Play

9/08/2014

Football is officially back and I couldn't be more excited! It was really nice spending the entire day Sunday watching Sunday Ticket and the Red Zone channel not to mention getting to watch my Bengals beat the Ravens! It definitely makes me miss getting to go to Bengals games although I can't complain about getting to watch from the comfort of my couch. Especially since I was nursing a wicked hangover yesterday. Note to self, me and shots no longer mix. I definitely won't be doing that again, ever! So instead of doing a weekend recap today ( I don't remember much of my Saturday night and from what I've heard it wasn't pretty at all) I decided to do another edition of the Ladies Guide to Football!

So you already read about the basics of football so let's get a little more into what happens during the playing time of the game shall we?

The offense has 4 chances (downs) to get to move the ball 10 yards down the field to their end zone. 4 chances to move something 10 yards seems easy but in all reality it can be pretty tough especially if you're playing a good defense. After each play they update the number of downs and how many yards are left before you get the 10 yards (so 1st and 10 means it's the 1st down and you have 10 yards to go before you get to another 1st down). Got it?

Ok, moving on then. If you can't move the ball the full 10 yards then the punter will punt the ball to the other team so they get their chance to try to score. If you're close enough to your end zone instead of punting you can kick a field goal which equals 3 points. Now if you recall from the previous post if you manage to get the ball into your end zone you can either kick a field goal which equals one point or you can "go for two". A two point conversion isn't a popular play because it basically means you have one shot to score another touchdown but it can be extremely helpful in a close game.

Hopefully you're still with me! There are other ways the the other team can get the ball (this is called a turnover) when the offense is on the field and that's by getting an interception or recovering a fumble. If the defense gets an interception it means the quarterback messed up and threw the ball to the other team or the defense is able to catch the ball before the guy that the ball was intended for. A fumble happens when someone on the offense drops the ball and the defense recovers it. A fumble can also happen if the defense gets to the quarterback and sacks (tackles) him while he's attempting to throw the ball.

Again, I don't want to completely overload you so I'll leave it there and let the offensive plays soak in. Hopefully this helps a little the next time you're watching a game!

  4. Ok, you are slowly helping me understand football :) I kind of get the idea of it, like I can watch a game, but the calls sometimes confuse me and I'm not quick to react like most people, I wait to see what everyone else does to see if it was a good thing or not haha.

  10. Oh girl shots are the absolute WORST these days! Hope you are feeling better. I am so glad that you are doing the Ladies Guide to Football. There are so many dang rules that my head can never keep them straight. I don't know how I grew up in Texas and know very little about football.

  17. This is perfect, I will need to review this again before I attempt to watch another game. haha It was funny yesterday we were watching and I asked my boyfriend to explain the plays, he was like "you'll have to be more specific...." and I'm like I can't haha explain everything. I did get the 3 point kick thing, and the going for 1 or 2 points after a touch down... it's a work in progress. No idea why football is so hard for me to remember.

  29. Seriously, this is the best post!! Eric is a huge baseball fan so I've pretty much got that sport figured out. But he's getting more into football and we've had games on the TV and I never know what's going on! So between your post and Friday Night Lights on Netflix, I should eventually get the game figured out? ha ha!
